Corning Inc of the United States setup a research and
development center in Hsinchu, northern Taiwan. The R&D center will also
research some other products such as solar cells, regenerated energies, opto-communication,
catalytic converters, etc. Corning is planning to recruit about eight scientists
for the new laboratory by the end of next year, targeting mostly local experts.
Local sources pointed out that Corning, in fact, planned to set up the R&D
center in Taiwan many years ago, but the project was delayed by an
intellectual-property infringement litigation against local Picvue Electronics
Ltd, which finally reached a conciliation with Corning last year. Corning,
accounts for an over-50 percent share of the global glass-substrate market, will
also collaborate with the government-financed Industrial Technology Research
Institute to develop new technologies on an as-needed basis.
