CII launches Logistics Institute for Logistics & SCM

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched the CII Institute of Logistics in Chennai. This center of excellence in logistics and supply chain management (SCM) is being set up to enhance the competitiveness of the Indian industry.

The institute, first of its kind in India will create trained professionals and train logistics and SCM professionals to increase awareness, understand and facilitate adoption of logistics and SCM, so also the best practices and technologies across the Indian industry. With this, South India would have three of the six center of excellence run by CII--Institute of Quality, Bangalore; Green Business Center, Hyderabad; and Logistics Institute,
Chennai.

Delivering the keynote address, Ashok Soota, President, CII, said that effective logistics and supply chain management would increase overall growth of the economy. He added that to achieve 10 percent growth rate for the industry, the industry needs to focus on competitiveness-based issues like logistics and supply chain management.

The manufacturing sector which contributes 23 percent of India's GDP is severely hampered by infrastructure bottlenecks.

Priority should be given to improve the ground level infrastructure such as roads, ports and transport facilities, custom connectivity through electronic networks, application of electronic data for creating a competitive environment and to ensure a smooth supply chain and logistics management.

CII Institute of Logistics would be a National Centre of Learning and would work in collaboration with similar institutes across the globe. The focus and services of the institute would be on education and training, information and knowledge
dissemination, consultancy, research, and supply chain improvement projects.
