Ciena Corporation,
recently inaugurated its new office in Mumbai with the objective of
strengthening the company's global presence and increasing its
customer base in India, a strategic target market for the company.
The fully-functioning office hosts a team dedicated to meet the
next-generation network infrastructure needs of service providers and
enterprises across the country. These operations are being led by
Ryan Perera, country head-global field organization, India Ciena.
Perera joined Ciena through its acquisition of Nortel's Metro
Ethernet Networks (MEN) business in March 2010.

The expanded operations
aim to build on Ciena's existing commercial activities in the
country by providing for more intimate customer relationships and
support for the company's advanced products and services with
customers in India. The new office in Mumbai supports Ciena's
long-term strategic plan for the Indian market and builds upon the
existing research and development centre in Gurgaon, which is the
company's largest R&D facility outside of North America with
more than 300 network specialists.

Speaking on the
inauguration, Mike Aquino, senior VP-global field operations, Ciena
said, “Ciena began with the mission to radically change the
economics of telecommunications networks. Over the years, with
industry-leading innovation and superior customer service, we've
achieved leadership positions in several high-growth markets,
including optical transport, optical switching and carrier Ethernet
service delivery and aggregation. India is an important growth market
to Ciena for all of these solutions. In fact, for several years
already, our Ciena India R&D facility has been conducting
advanced product development for storage extension, optical
transport, multi-service switching, access and network management for
our customers worldwide. With our new office in Mumbai, we're
better able to leverage that local expertise and deliver specialized
service to customers across the country.”

Ryan Perera, country
head-global field organization, Ciena India added, “With India
being a key growth market in the global economy, we established our
largest R&D centre (outside of North America) in India, which has
been successfully providing support to our customers across the globe
for several years. The Indian telecommunications market continues to
grow exponentially, and we are committed to serving the specific
needs of this important market. For example, we've grown our
customer base in India by offering 3G service-enabling technologies
for a large number of mobile service providers. And, we've deployed
next-generation submarine architectures with innovative technologies
that help customers create and adopt more competitive business models
from depreciated network infrastructure assets.”

Ciena's products and
services portfolio offers best-of-breed solutions focused on
converged optical Ethernet to accelerate the transition to
next-generation network infrastructures. Ciena was first to market
with coherent 40G/100G optical systems for applications such as
metro, long-haul and submarine transport, and has more years of
experience than any other company and the most field deployments
worldwide for that technology. Ciena is also focused on delivering
Carrier Ethernet solutions for mobile backhaul and business Ethernet
services, as well as automated OTN switching combined with control
plane software for resiliency and faster time-to-market.

In the larger Asia Pacific
region, Ciena provides solutions to customers in Australia, New
Zealand, India, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and South
Korea. Globally, the company serves nearly three-quarters of the
world's largest service providers, global enterprises as well as
research and education institutions and other essential government
