At a time when service has become a clear differentiator when it comes to
winning competition –Samsung India has just revamped its service strategy
towards HDD replacement. The channel community has welco-med the revamped
strategy of keeping buffer stocks.

The channel community is especially upbeat about the way Samsung has reacted
to the replacement issue in a positive way. "Samsung has done a good job
with this and now our customers are quite happy with the move. Now we are
getting the replacement done in a matter of three to four days. Earlier it used
to take about a month for this," infor-med Shyam Modi, MD, Modi Peripherals
Pvt. Ltd, Delhi.

Princy Bhatnagar, National Marketing Manager, Samsung Electronics India said
that the move was planned because of the shortage of HDDs was resulting in
resentment on the customer’s front.

"Sometime back we were facing a shortage of HDDs and it was not good for
our custo-mers as well as the channels community, so we decided to overcome this
situation. Two months back we started this initiative and now we have more than
11,000 buffer HDDs available with our channels all across the country. This has
res-ulted in creation of a goodwill for all of us and the turnaround time has
been reduced to three days now," he explained.

According to Ajay Seth, AGM (Customer Service), Samsung, the company is
looking for-ward to increase the envelope of its present marketshare by another
notch. "We are selling close to one lakh units per mo-nths and this move
will defini-tely help us to increase our present marketshare of 60 percent
further up. At present, we are having 262 authorized service centers all across
India and out of this around 17 are specializing in HDD related problems,"
Seth added.

In a recent move to address the issue of HDD replacements, Samsung has given
a buffer stock of 3,000 HDDs to Lucknow based Computer Shack Private Ltd (CSPL)
- its service partner for the region.

At present Samsung with a 3-year warranty on its HDD–is competing head-on
with Seagate and Maxtor. This move will go a long way in further entrenching the
company firmly into the Indian market.
