Recognizing the threat from breach of peripheral security
caused by information loss from network printers in enterprises, Canon has
anno-unced that it would make security an integral part of its imaging and
printing devices and solutions. This marks Canon's entry into the Rs 235 crore
greenfield Indian market for peripheral security market.

Lakshmi Narayan Rao, Mar-keting Assistant Director, Canon OSS
(value) said that most CIOs invest in security measures like firewalls and
anti-virus software, but fail to acknowledge the danger from the ubiquitous
network printer. "Peripheral security breaches are the second most
important reason for information loss. MFDs and network laser printers store
data in the hard disk, which can be ferreted out easily," he said. He also
pointed out that Indian enterprises, which are carrying out out-sourcing work
involving sensi-tive data, would be required to follow strict compliance and
regulatory procedures.

Canon's security solutions would offer features like data
overwrite protection and secure print options, which would ensure that only the
authorized user could take a print of a confidential document. MFDs and network
laser printers enabled with the security capability was shipped globally in
November and is now being introduced for the first time in India. This security
feature, which is a combination of hardware and software, would be offered
across its enterprise solutions at no extra cost. Customers who want to upgrade
to the security option would however have to pay towards the installation cost.
