GNU and Linux in Indian languages, Center for Development of Advanced Computing
(C-DAC) has laun-ched its 'Janabhaaratii' pro-ject. Titled
"Localization of free/ open source software: development, deployment and
community building", the project aims to contribute to community efforts in
developing a software suite based on GNU/Linux in Indian languages.
The Technology Develop-ment in Indian Languages (TDIL) group of the Depart-ment
of Information Techno-logy has funded this project. The objective is to invite,
build and support community initia-tives to produce and disse-minate free and
open source software systems, applications and content.
According to C-DAC officials, the project has been modeled to suit Indian
languages and find applications in diverse areas such as home use, mass
applications, education, rural areas, info kiosks, cyber cafes, e-governance and
content creation.
The project inherits and will enhance the access and usability of the
resources and capabilities garnered by C-DAC in Indian language technologies
over the last 15 years. C-DAC, Mumbai is at the fore-front of Indian language
technology mission with its Indix project for making GNU and Linux operating
systems speci-fically intelligent about Indic scripts and provide the world with
a more generic app-roach to deal with these complex scripts.
