All
major IT companies are eyeing manufacturing of low-priced computers. Asus
started manufacturing low-priced computers and now plans to introduce related
products in the first half of 2007. The price range will be around $150 to 250
(NT$4,963 to 8,272). With the price of Flash going down, HD computer system will
also debut at the same time. In terms of CPU makers, AMD introduced PIC aimed at
desktop PCs. On the other hand, Intel's Edu-Wise plan is introducing $400
laptop computers. Quanta, Realtek, and ENE have all joined MIT's OLPC, the
low-price computer project. Eying the potential of newly developed countries,
low-priced computers can be an opportunity for the industry. At the user end,
computer industry will go to extremes, high-priced and low-priced markets. Asus
also mentioned that Flash keeps dropping its price. In future, a low-priced
computer will only require 4G hard-drive capacity to run related OS and basic
applications. Therefore, low-priced computers will become a combination of
panel, motherboard and computer bus.
