AMD opens design center in India

The second largest chipmaker, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), has opened a
development center in India’s Silicon City, Bangalore. The center, a wholly
owned subsi-diary of AMD, would engage in the engineer-ing design work for the
chip giant. The cen-ter to be ope-ned in July 2004 will hire 40 engineers this
year and exp-ects to ramp up the team to 120, by the end of 2005. A full-fledged
product from the AMD India Engineering Center would be rolled out in the next
three years, according to Gopal Krishna, Strategic Development Manager, AMD
India Engineering Center.

"The AMD center enhances our commitment to customer centric innovation
by establish-ing a strong presence in the emerging markets of South East Asia.
We have aggressive goals to enhance our 64-bit micro processor offerings and
bring advance technologies to the largest number of customers around the
world," said Ajay Marathe, President of AMD India and Corporate VP (IT),
Global Supply Management.

"The combi-nation of out-standing engi-neering talent and cost
advan-tages make Ban-galore an opti-mal place to lo-cate a new des-ign
facility," said Randy Allen, VP (Engineering) for AMD’s compu-tation
products groups.

The enginee-ring center will also support AMD’s emerging market busi-ness;
development efforts through system level design work carried out in conjunction
with AMD’s global engineering teams. The company joins its arch rival Intel
and Texas Instruments in having a design and development center in Bangalore,
India.
