AMD marks Two Year nnniversary of AMD Athlon

The the second anniversary of the award-winning AMD Athlon processor was marked by announcing that its new 1.1GHz mobile AMD Athlon 4 and 900MHz mobile AMD Duron processors, featuring AMD PowerNow technology, will be used by Compaq Computer Corporation in its best-selling home and small office notebook, the Compaq Presario 1200 series.

Since the introduction two years ago of the AMD Athlon processor, AMD's unit market share for x86 processors has risen from 12.6 percent in the third quarter of 1999 to more than 22 percent in the Q2 of 2001, according to Mercury Research.

AMD, traditionally strong in the retail market, has also experienced significant x86 processor market share gains in the small and medium business, government and education markets. According to Dataquest's latest unit share figures, AMD desktop processors commanded 37 percent of the North American small business market, as well as 32 percent of government and 21 percent of education markets in the first quarter of

2001.

The AMD Athlon processor also achieved widespread industry acclaim. Product of the Year in 2000, and Maximum PC's CPU of the Year in 1999 and 2000.

AMD plans to capitalize on the success of the AMD Athlon processor with the introduction of three new family members: the 1.1GHz mobile AMD Athlon 4 processor, the 900MHz mobile AMD Duron processor and the 1GHz AMD Duron processor for desktop PCs.
