AMD launches APU

Bengaluru based semi-conductor giant,

flags off a new platform called Accelerated Processing Unit
(APU). This is a combination of CPU and GPU and is said to bring in
new technology standard. Manju Hegde, Corporate VP-Fusion
Experience Program, AMD said, “This is the start of a new
generation of computing. APU will take computing to its greater
heights. India's R&D team has played a pivotal role in
collaborating the design and worked on it tirelessly.” The new chip
has features like high battery life without too much of thermal
radiation, high processing speed etc. AMD launched two new versions—E
series the 18 watt APU, which is primarily for notebooks, desktops
and laptops. Another version is C series the 9 watt APU designed for
netbooks and small form desktops.

Sharing their channel plans, Ravi
Swaminathan, MD and Regional VP-Sales and Marketing, AMD said, “We
are completely channel friendly organization but are not looking at
box pushing partners. We want partners to participate along with us
on the same platform. They should be vocal about their customer
requirements so that we can improve our products. Like wise partners
should also educate and evaluate themselves.” AMD is looking at
targeting all sections of partners including enterprise. The company
also claims that all leading vendors from Dell, Asus, HP to Lenovo
will launch their products with the new fusion chipsets. Swaminathan
said, “Partners can look forward to selling new form factors on the
computing platform. We can definitely tell our partners, that the new
fusion range is something to look out for, and that it is a different
value proposition altogether.” The chip was unveiled by leading
Hindi film actress Gul Panag. AMD has tremendous focus on its R&D
centers both in Hyderabad and Bengaluru this year.
