AKOLA: The cotton king of Maharashtra 

Akola, a town and district of India, close to Nagpur is one of the chief centers of cotton trade for Maharashtra. There are various facets of this small city. The town is on the Murna tributary of the Purna river, 930 ft. above the sea, Akola proper being on the west bank, and Tajnapeth, containing the government buildings and European resi-dences, on the east bank. It is a station on the Nagpur branch of the Great Indian Peninsula railway and is 383 m ENE of Bombay. Akola is one of the chief centres of the cotton trade in Berar, and has nume-rous ginning factories and cotton presses. 

Akola was reconstituted in 1905 and has an area of 4111 sq meter. The surface of the country is generally flat, the greater part being situated in the central valley of Berar. On the north, it is bounded by the Melghat hills. By the addition of Basim and Mangrul taluks, the district includes the eastern part of the Ajanta hills, with peaks rising to 2000 ft and the tableland of Basim. North of the Ajanta hills, the country is drained eastward by the Puma affluent of the Tapti and its tri-butaries. None of the rivers is navigable. The climate resem-bles that of Berar generally, but the heat during April to mid-June, when the rains begin, it is high.

But even during the hot season the nights are cool. The annual rainfall averages 34 inch. In the Purna valley the soil is everywhere a rich black loam, and nearly the whole of the land is cultivated. Very little land is under irrigation. The principal crop is cotton, and the staple grain millet. Wheat and pulses are also grown. The history of Akola is not distin-guished from that of the other portions of Berar.

Akola is in the western parts of Nagpur and is surrounded by Amravati in north and Amra-vati and Yawaymahal in east, Parbhani in south and Buldana in west. This is connected by road with the important and big cities of
Maharashtra.

Akola city is located in the north central part of Mahara-shtra state, western India, on the banks of Murna river and it is an important district in Vidarbha region of Mahara-shtra State. An important road and rail junction in the Tapti River valley.

Akola is an important educational center with several colleges affiliated with the University of
Nagpur.

The city of Akola is the district headquarters of Akola district. It is surrounded by Amravati district in the north, Amravati and Yavatmal districts in the east, Parbhani and parts of Yavatmal districts in the south and Buldhana district in the west. Main languages spoken in the Akola are Mara-thi, Hindi, Gujarati, Sindhi, and Urdu.

Akola has a research-cum-development centre. The fam-ous ‘Mahabeej’ factory, pro-ducing super-quality seeds is located here. Naturally, Vidar-bha’s only Agricultural Univer-sity is also here. Narnala fort in Akot taluka, Parshwanath Jain temple of Shirpur, Rajra-jeshwar temple, power genera-tion plant of Paras, the irri-gation project in Mahan on Katepurna river are among the places of tourist attraction. 

Akola Industrial Area esta-blished in the year1972, is one of the oldest industrial estates of Maharashtra state. It was set-up with the main objective being promotion of agro based industries. The objective has been achieved. The area was set-up with 21 hectares of land in 1972 (Phase-I) has now expanded itself to cover 281 hectares. Besides this, there is a further expansion on 661 hect. of land adjoining this industrial area.

Considering the large fer-tile agriculture land and huge agricultural produce like cotton and pulses in this region, the industrial giants like Tata established large unit of insecticide in Asia and Mafatlal Group established their unit of the irrigation HDPE pipe and fitting respe-ctively in this Akola industrial area and enjoying the pros-perity and expansion of their units, further Padgilwar Gr-oup has established units, of agricultural equipment which is the pioneer unit in to 

the field of agricultural engineering. 

Further, large number of the enthusiastic entrepreneurs also established 110 units of dal mill and pulses in Akola industrial area and awarded the reputation of number one pulses producing industrial area of India. Akola is also IT friendly as it has its own asso-ciation with a strong member base of IT members. The assoc-iation has also been condu-cting IT activities for the members.
