Sun Microsystems Inc is to run Collaborative Research Program with leading

Indian technology institutions. MoUs to this effect have already been signed

with IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur. Talks are on with Indian Institute

of Science and IIT Mumbai.

The Program is aimed at focused research in cutting-edge and emerging

technologies such as protocol verification of mobile systems, replication of Web

resources and server selection, mobile agent based transcoding framework,

compilation issues in Java software, high performance digital design using

asynchronous micropipelines, advanced research on Java card technology and

Rangu Sampath, Director (Technology), Sun Microsystems, said, "The

Program will provide Indian educational institutions with the technology

infrastructure and knowledge and thus help them turn out students with skills

relevant to today’s network age."

The Program will function on the "Virtual Teams" concept followed

by Sun worldwide, where team members from Sun Labs across the globe, work in

tandem on projects located in their respective Labs including India —

"virtually". Similarly, CRP researchers in India work in close

partnership with Sun Labs technologists in US & Europe.

According to Dr Avinash Agrawal, Director, India Engineering Center,

"Sun & Indians worldwide have a recognized reputation for being thought

leaders in the technology arena and this new partnership has immense

possibilities."

Dr Jeff Rulifson, Director (Laboratories, Europe), Sun Microsystems, said,

"Indians have been pioneering new technology development all across the

globe and we see India as becoming a key development site and growth area for

us. We are very excited to work with the brightest brains in the country and

pave the way for more collaborations between Sun and Indian technology

institutions."

High-end technology infrastructure will also be provided by Sun including a

state-of-the-art Enterprise 10000 server stationed in the US with accompanying

software, which will be exclusively used for this collaboration.
