A new software development and management institute, the Sankat Mochan Institute of Information Technology (SM-IIT) was inaugurated at Gomtinagar. Shambhy Nath, Principal Secretary to the Governor and Devendra Sharma, former vice-chancellor, Gorakhpur University and Banaras Hindu University, inaugurated the institute. 

Chairman AK Singh said that the institute would offer various courses, including one-year post-graduate diploma in computer application, as well as six- month and short-term courses in leading areas of information and technology. The institute would offer courses recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and are planning a tie-up with various universities. 

Singh said that the course structure was designed in such a manner that students may absorb and assimilate it easily and might be able to implement the same. He said that the training strategies adopted would ensure that the students understood the technology as well as the learning aspect. The chairman said that the corporate service division would provide technical and management related training to multi-national companies, government bodies and leading companies. Such training would be customized as per the requirements of the clients or the industry.
