Samsung to set up monitor plant in India

Samsung Electronics' Vice Chairman and CEO, Jong Yon Yun, visited India on the occasion of the completion of 5 years of Samsung operations in the country. He announced on the occasion, the company's plans of setting up a color monitor manufacturing facility at

Noida.

Addressing a Press Conference held in the Capital, Yun stated that Samsung's Vision for India includes, 'deeply rooting itself in the Indian consumer electronics and IT industry, complementing the Indian consumer electronics and IT industry, complementing the Indian Software skills with Samsung's Hardware expertise and contributing to the development of India as an 'IT Super Power'. "Step by step, we want to expand our operations here, to include products and businesses other than the ones we are currently doing in the country", said

Yun.

Samsung's automated and state of the art color monitor plant will be Samsung's seventh color monitor facility in the world. The plant to be set up with an investment of $ 10 million, will be located at Noida, adjacent to Samsung India's Noida CTV facility. Construction work of this factory will begin this month and it will be ready for production by June 2001. Samsung will be manufacturing both its 'SyncMaster' and 'Samtron' color monitor brands in the country in 14", 15" and 17" screen sizes.

According to G S Choi, Executive Vice President and GM, Display Division, SEC, "In the first phase of its operations till 2001, the plant will have a capacity of 1 million units and will cater to the domestic market in India. Subsequently by the year 2005, the capacity of the plant will be enhanced to 4 million units with fresh investments of $ 25 million".

Samsung Electronics India has a product portfolio that constitutes 70 percent of the value of a standard PC. Its product portfolio comprises of color monitors, around 19 models ranging from 14" to 21" sizes, including TFT LCD Monitors, Storage products: HDDs ranging from 4.3 GB to 35 GB, ODDs (52X CD-ROM, 12-X DVD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-RW Combo Drives), Multimedia Kits and Laser Printers.
