Red Hat India has announced Red Hat Scholarships–The Open
Source Cha-llenge, an education initiative designed to encourage budd-ing open
source software deve-lopers. The program is open to students from engineering
colleges across India and carries scholarships of Rs 10 lakh. The program will
be conducted jointly with the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Tech-nology at
IIT-Bombay.
An eminent panel of renow-ned leaders, including Dr DB Phatak,
founder of the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology at IIT-Bombay, Prof
S Sadagopan, Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology,
Bangalore, Dire-ctor of Netcore Solutions, Raje-sh Jain and others form the
advisory board for the Red Hat Scholarships.
According to Javed Tapia, Director, Red Hat India, the
objective of Red Hat Scholar-ships is to reach out to Linux enthusiasts in
engineering col-leges across India and encou-rage the adoption of the open
source philosophy.
Open Source is a worl-dwide movement that consists of people
across the world colla-borating over the Inter-net to develop soft-ware. The
software thus developed is us-ually distributed under the General Public License
(GPL) that allows other users to see its code and modify it.
These software programs hold enormous relevance for
developing countries, where software prices are beyond the reach of the common
man.
