Facebook AR Glasses Patent Reveal Transparent Display Design

Thanks to a patent application filed by the members of Oculus advanced research division, it is revealed that Facebook is working on developing augmented reality (AR) glasses that could blend digital objects with the real world.

Facebook AR glasses new details revealed

The application obtained by Business Insider is for “waveguide display with two-dimensional scanner” that “may augment views of a physical, real-world environment with computer-generated elements.”

The Facebook CEO is of the opinion that AR will be the next big consumer tech platform after smartphones. According to the reports, the patent application details a pair of glasses with transparent displays for lenses, through which light would flow, distributing the light and refracting it into the user’s eyes. The glasses will use a waveguide system that projects images and light into the user’s eyes. In addition to this, the glasses will also be capable of playing audio when connected to a pair of headphones or speakers.

While the work on the technology is currently on for Facebook’s smart glasses now, don’t expect the device to launch anytime soon. Michael Abrash, chief scientist of Oculus, recently said that AR glasses won’t be replacing smartphones until 2022.
