Budding IT destination of Amritsar: Nehru Shopping Complex

By Sandhya Malhotra - 4 December, 2012

Situated on Lawrence Road, Nehru Shopping Complex is a well established IT market of Amritsar. The decade-old market complex has a majority of IT and non-IT shops. Presently, 90% of the IT dealers are having their IT showrooms, godowns and service centers in this market. Catering to the end customers and corporates, the market has most of the multi-branded and exclusive showrooms.

Although an old complex, it requires attention on the part of the concerned authorities as utter disregard is terms of security and cleanliness is apparent in the complex. The occupants have approached authorities to provide improved facilities in keeping with the changing times.

Speaking on the challenges being faced in the complex, Krishan Lal Narang, owner of Narang Computers and an IT veteran, pointed out, "Security of the complex is a major issue, although most of the shops are equipped with CCTV cameras and have private security guards, the plaza does not have any security for the occupants."

Agreeing to Narang, Jatin Talwar, director of Shree Ganpati Systems added, "Since this market is located in the heart of the city, we are getting good walk-ins. Moreover, most of the major distributors and vendors are having their nearest base in Ludhiana. The market faces issues related to service centers and direct vendor support."

The market also attracts tourist business. Moreover, it is a hub for students and home users who buy from here. Additionally, educational institutes and corporates are the other big customers.

Though the complex boasts of being the largest IT market in Amritsar, opening of large format stores like Croma, Hypercity and others has frightened dealers, who fear to loose their end customer business. Nevertheless, to beat this odd, the market has recently got its high tech laptop repair center-Expert Technologies. Birinder Singh, owner of Expert Technologies said, "The failure rate in laptop has been increasing, and in Amritsar, we lack good service centers. Hence, with the opening of this center, we would be capable of providing chip level laptop and desktop repairing. We have high tech machines to do the repair work. Now customers can see repairing of their laptops, at minimal charges and no waiting hours."

Most of the dealers of Nehru complex are members of the local IT association, Amritsar Computer Traders Association (ACTA). Interactions with channel partners indicated that the association commands immense respect among the partner community and has significant achievements under its belt.
